The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear by M. Pax

Hetty Locklear lives in a nerd girl fantasy where she is the savior of a dying ancient galactic race. When she’s not role playing in the exotic game world she created, she dreams of being the new It Girl with suave clothes, hundreds of friends, hunks galore falling at her slippered feet, awesome parties, and a job to make every person in the cosmos drool.

Instead she’s stuck at the convenience store wearing stretchy clothes to fit over the paunch formed from a steady diet of donuts and coffee and with a social calendar as empty as deep space. In her whole life she’s only acquired two friends  — a cousin, who barely counts, and her best friend since grade school.

Hetty is banking on graduation from community college to transform her into a full-fledged woman. It doesn’t. It gets her an unflattering coffee stain down the front of her gown and an invitation from her parents to visit. Estranged since they went gallivanting off to fulfill their dream of working the Renaissance Faire circuit, Hetty isn’t eager to see them. However, this trip is the best chance she has to repair their broken relationship.

A steamy romance with her boss or the handsome stranger she met at the coffee shop would cure her doldrums, but she’s stuck with the annoying Sir Gnat and is stalked by a ghost. The invisible stranger leads her to a reality she finds hard to believe. It also leads to love and a better relationship with herself.

Immaterial Evidence by Milo James Fowler

Immaterial Evidence

A detective with a price on his head. An invisible criminal with nothing to lose.

The vault door never opened. The bank went into lockdown in less than a minute. Yet the security footage was unmistakable: a hundred silver bars had vanished into thin air.

To avoid the fury of a local mob boss, private investigator Charlie Madison has been hiding out in Little Tokyo. But when an old friend lures Madison back into the city to hunt down an invisible criminal–if he can–federal agents swoop onto the scene and take matters into their own hands. They offer Madison a deal he can’t refuse if he agrees to work with them. As Japanese freedom fighters and refurbished killing machines threaten to take the world to the brink of nuclear holocaust, the United World government needs all the help it can get.

Embroiled in an unimaginable mystery, one private eye must rely on his wits to solve a case where the evidence is immaterial, and the odds are stacked high against him at every turn.

TwistedEarthsAnthology (4)

Twisted Earths is a collection of tales from Untethered Realms, a group of speculative fiction authors. Hot Flashes and Cold Lemonade by Susan Flett Swiderski

Living the perfect life has always been easy peasy for Pearl Bryzinski, because she’s practically a pro at ignoring the negative and putting a positive spin on the facts, but it’s impossible for her to find anything positive about Daddy skipping town with that blue-haired floozy in a flashy brown Pinto. No matter how hard she tries, she can’t ignore the fact that he’s gone… or the fact that she’s becoming a drama queen who can sweat like a sumo wrestler doing push-ups in a sauna. It’s almost enough to suck the blush out of her rose-colored glasses. Whether she likes it or not, she’s gonna have to turn some of her wishbone into backbone.

Layer by layer, assumptions and misconceptions peel away, as Pearl learns to buck up in the face of reality, and to laugh at her imperfect… but not so bad… life. Supported by a down-to-earth husband who loves her with every blue-collar bone in his body, a mother who isn’t the self-centered witch Pearl imagined her to be, three terrific grown kids… okay, make that two terrific kids, and a Golden Boy who’s a far cry from 24-carat… and a bunch of wonderful wacky gal pals, Pearl comes to realize that her mixed bag of family and friends makes her life damned near perfect. Pearl being Pearl, she’ll never give up her rosy specs entirely, but learning to handle reality also means learning to deal with death.

The blurbs and covers are all really enticing.
I am particularly attracted to the YA fantasy. Strange how writing in a genre attracts one towards reading that genre – one would think a bit of variety would be sought!
